ADHD Parent Support Post: You ARE a Good Parent!

June 29th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Support

Having a child with ADHD is really hard!

There will be times that you will feel frustrated and completely defeated.

There will be times when others will tell you (or imply) that you are a bad parent because your kid is misbehaving.

There will be times that you will feel completely out of control.

And you will feel that life is horrible and there will be no end to your suffering.

But I want you to know: YOU ARE A GOOD PARENT!

And you will find a way out.

If you are reading this;  If you spend your time researching and looking for ways to help your child;  If you keep trying different things and never give up, I just know that you will succeed.

I know you will because I have done it and so have many others.

So pat yourself on the back, give yourself a big hug, and say to yourself outloud: “I am a good parent.  I can do this!”

Thanks to your hard work, your child will get out of the situation they are in right now, their behavior will improve, and you will all be much happier.

It can be done.

I did it.

And so can you.

Just keep trying and it WILL happen.

Find yourself some ADHD parent support, or leave a comment here with your thoughts.  I would love to help you out and give you some insight into how life can be when the ADHD is under control.  And – of course – how to get there.

Go ahead.  I’m here.

ADHD & Sugar

There is no scientific evidence that ADHD & sugar are related.  However, we mothers see it every day, as the following story will show.

One day when my oldest, Jason, was around 13 or 14 we went out for ice cream.

I ordered an ice cream and he got a slurpie.

When we were done eating, he said to me: “Mom, I don’t think I should have slupries anymore.  They give me that feeling

He was referring to a feeling he would get when his ADHD was acting up.  I will write about it in another post.

At the time, I was trying to get him to understand the direct effect that sugar was having on his behavior and his general feeling.  He knew that sugar wasn’t good for him, but it took a few incidents like this one to make him understand fully just how direct the effect of sugar was on him.

Now, if you think about it, a slurpie is a really bad thing to have for someone with a sugar sensitivity.  It’s just all sugar (and food coloring :-0 ) in liquid form that goes straight into your bloodstream.

Yet I am happy that he had this experience.  I believe that Instead of  forbidding him to have foods that are bad for him – he was able to come to that conclusion himself and take responsibility for himself.  I don’t think he’s had a slurpie since, BTW, and he is 15.5 now.

Do you have a story about ADHD & Sugar?  If so, please post it below.

My name is Sharon. I have ADHD and so do at least 2 of my kids.

I’ve spent endless hours researching online and offline on how to control ADHD and how to help myself and (mostly) my kids live the best life possible.

I call this blog ADHD Lab because I would like to help others in my situation benefit from our experience.   So the “lab” that I am refering to is actually my family and the families of the blog readers who would like to share their experiences.

Lets make this world a better place for all those ADHDers out there.
